Brief Introduction of LHM

Our History

Leong Hwa Monastery has more than a hundred years' of history. This was established from land title records dated on 21 March 1901. These records also contained information on the role of the various venerables towards the development of the Monastery. Some of the prominent past venerables include Venerable Sek Hock Siew, Venerable Sek Sok Wah, Venerable Sek Leong Choon, Venerable Sek Cheng San, Venerable Sek Cheng Kong and Venerable Sek Whay Kuan.

The names of the Monastery was changed a few times and the present name, LEONG HWA MONASTERY was adopted at a recent general meeting held on 20 April 2003. The new name better reflects the kind of activities of this Buddhist temple following the redevelopment of the building in May 2002.

Our Special Advisor
Venerable Sek Meow Ee

Our Special Advisor

Venerable Sek Meow Ee serves as the Special Advisor of Leong Hwa Monastery. Since assuming leadership in 1989, he has been the visionary architect behind the monastery’s modernization, transforming it from a modest, dilapidated sanctuary into a dynamic centre for Dharma propagation and social service.

A Life of Purpose: The "No Regrets" Path
Venerable Meow Ee’s journey into the Sangha began with a childhood aspiration to lead a noble life. Choosing renunciation over a potentially lucrative secular career, he views material wealth as a "passing cloud," prioritising spiritual fulfilment and the pursuit of absolute truth. His personal philosophy—leaving the world "with a smile rather than regrets"—underpins his approach to monastic life, where he utilises the Dharma as a source of optimism and wisdom to navigate life’s challenges.

Visionary Leadership & Institutional Growth
Upon his arrival at Leong Hwa in 1989, the monastery housed only two elderly residents and faced significant financial uncertainty. Rejecting a passive reliance on public donations, Venerable Meow Ee implemented a model of self-sufficiency. Under his stewardship:

  • Architectural Transformation: He oversaw the 2003 reconstruction of the monastery, opting for a functional, "new age" design that is both cost-effective to maintain and ideally suited for contemporary religious activities.
  • Social & Charitable Impact: He spearheaded numerous community initiatives, notably the establishment of the LHCST-NKF Dialysis Centre. In 2001, he consolidated these efforts by founding Viriya Community Services, a prominent social service agency dedicated to social welfare.

Modern Management & Youth Engagement
Recognising the shifting global landscape, Venerable Meow Ee pioneered the integration of modern management techniques with Buddhist principles. He believes that religious organisations must remain relevant to survive and thrive. A champion for the younger generation, he has restructured the monastery’s activities to attract elite youth, providing them with leadership opportunities and platforms to display their talents. By moving beyond traditional rituals to include active community contribution, he has established Leong Hwa as a hub where the Dharma is practiced as a practical, forward-thinking way of life.
